During the very final part of last year’s summer we made a pretty interesting discovery.
Now, you and I may have different ideas on what we find interesting and that’s ok! We don’t shame around here and that’s fine, because what we found was a road… but not any normal road. Its was a road built in the middle of the sea in the Netherlands. If you aren’t hooked on that then I’m not sure what to tell you other then maybe scroll ahead to at least see some of the photos I got. Otherwise read on!
Still here? Great. So back to the road, we found out about it whilst we were in the Netherlands and only about an hour or so away from it, so after a bit of Googling and map reading we figured out a route which would get us there via some other interesting stops along the way.
We set off the next day (literally very little in the way of planning this other than timing the final location with what was meant to be a pretty decent sunset) and hit the road. We thought we would hit some interesting landmarks along the way and we weren’t wrong! First of all we spotted this old disused water pumping station, given a lot of the current architecture around the Netherlands is very modern and “out there” it was nice to see something historical like this.
We didn’t have time to stop for the tour, but a quick walk around was enough to get some photos and be on our way.
The next stop was a little further along, we passed a really interesting town which I’ve marked for another day, but beyond that was the beach we were aiming for. Being the time of year it was, we were surprised to see how busy it was but the light was in our favour so we stopped for some food and photos. I really liked this apartment building right on the seafront, I like the bright red bars and the layering of the balconies.
This was a really nice little find so I plan visiting again at some point. Also, the Kibbeling was top tier and anyone who loves fish and chips should try it, you might prefer it.
Our final destination was just around the corner, so close it was visible from the beach. The sun was starting to go down so we set off again. We were aiming for the very middle of this part of the road, slap bang in the middle of the sea where there’s a petrol station and a small museum which was closed when we arrived. It didn’t feel like we were driving on or over the water, you can’t really see much until you hit that half way point where you can leave the main road and park up. That’s where this next set of photos were taken.
When we walked over towards the water, we could see what looked like a completely new, unused cycle patch which ran the length of the road. It went the whole way, vanishing into nothing in the distance. It slightly boggles my mind to think that someone would do this commute on a bike, but we are in the Netherlands.
There were also two small lighthouses which you could walk up to, other than that, water and concrete as far as the eye could see. The light totally did us a favour here, I’d like to see what it’s like in other conditions but considering its location I don’t fancy it in a storm too much.
That’s where the trip ends, we were running out of light and had the trip home to start. If you want to see these photos along with a few more, check out my video (back up the top, why didn't you watch that first?) which hopefully does a much better job of explaining this short road trip than I did here.
Thanks for reading!
